Professor Vanessa R. Moodley (PhD-DIT Ireland, M.Optom (cum laude), B.Optom
UKZN SA, CAS-NECO,USA), is an associate professor in the Discipline of Optometry,
University of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa where she has lectured for many years in
the areas of contact lenses, binocular vision (strabismus), public health and ethics.
Prof Moodley has served her profession in various leadership roles. She served 2 X
5-year terms on the regulatory body as Chairperson of the Professional Board for
Optometry and Dispensing Opticians in South Africa, African Council for Optometry as
Secretary/Treasurer and Education Committee chairperson. In her role as a Councillor
on the Health Professions Council of South Africa, she chaired the Business Practices
Committee and was a member of the Standards Generation Body, leading the initiative
that defined optometry competency standards. She currently serves on World Council
for Optometry Education Committee. Her areas of research interest include
Keratoconus (Cornea and Contact lenses) as well as Quality Standards and Social
Accountability in Optometry Education. Prof Moodley was co-founder of the
Keratoconus Foundation of South Africa and in partnership local hospitals facilitates
corneal transplants and contact lenses to indigent keratoconus patients. She
supervises many national and international post graduate students undertaking
research in keratoconus, contact lenses and optometry education and has
disseminated the work at various international conferences, and through scholarly
publications. Her most recent professional recognition has been as recipient of the
Centennial Award for Academic Excellence by the South African Optometric
Association.
