Professor Vanessa R. Moodley (PhD-DIT Ireland, M.Optom (cum laude), B.Optom UKZN SA, CAS-NECO,USA), is an associate professor in the Discipline of Optometry, University of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa where she has lectured for many years in the areas of contact lenses, binocular vision (strabismus), public health and ethics. Prof Moodley has served her profession in various leadership roles. She served 2 X 5-year terms on the regulatory body as Chairperson of the Professional Board for Optometry and Dispensing Opticians in South Africa, African Council for Optometry as Secretary/Treasurer and Education Committee chairperson. In her role as a Councillor on the Health Professions Council of South Africa, she chaired the Business Practices Committee and was a member of the Standards Generation Body, leading the initiative that defined optometry competency standards. She currently serves on World Council for Optometry Education Committee. Her areas of research interest include Keratoconus (Cornea and Contact lenses) as well as Quality Standards and Social Accountability in Optometry Education. Prof Moodley was co-founder of the Keratoconus Foundation of South Africa and in partnership local hospitals facilitates corneal transplants and contact lenses to indigent keratoconus patients. She supervises many national and international post graduate students undertaking research in keratoconus, contact lenses and optometry education and has disseminated the work at various international conferences, and through scholarly publications. Her most recent professional recognition has been as recipient of the Centennial Award for Academic Excellence by the South African Optometric Association.

Shane Patman is a Professor and Head of School of Heath Sciences within the National School of Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Health Sciences & Physiotherapy at The University of Notre Dame Australia. Shane graduated from Sydney University [BAppSc(Physiotherapy)(1990)] then completed a research MSc. (1999) and PhD (2005), both with Curtin University. He is a cardiorespiratory specialist and Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists (2009). He also has completed Grad Certs in Uni Teaching (2007) and Not‐for‐Profit Leadership and Management (2016) at Notre Dame, and the Company Directors Course Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (2011). Beyond Notre Dame Shane has been actively engaged with the physiotherapy profession nationally and internationally serving as Vice‐President of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, Chair of the Australian Physiotherapy Council, inaugural President of the International Confederation of Cardiorespiratory Physical Therapists, and leading the World Physiotherapy Conference Planning Committee for 2021. Shane has 57 peer-reviewed publications (18 in last 5 years), supervised 3 PhD, 4 Masters & 16 honours students, peer-reviewed over 550 pre-publication manuscripts for 89 journals, and is on 5 journal editorial boards. He is a regular invited speaker nationally and internationally (18 in last 5 years).

Dr Caroline Jagoe is Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Speech and Language Studies, Trinity College, The University of Dublin and a visiting scholar in the School of Human and Community Development at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. She holds a professional qualification in speech-language therapy and audiology from the University of the Witwatersrand, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. She is currently completing a Masters in Law, focusing on human rights and international justice. With a clinical background in speech and language therapy, Caroline has worked in the public health system in South Africa and in Ireland, as well as on collaborative projects in a wide range of countries including Central African Republic, Cambodia, Ethiopia, India, Iraq, Mozambique, Myanmar and Somalia. The thread of ‘inclusive societies’ runs through her research: from a micro-focus on participation in conversations involving people with communication disability and their communication partners; extending to a macro-focus on disability rights in humanitarian and development contexts. The participation of people who are frequently marginalised in research and programming is at the heart of her work, with a specific focus on the inclusion of people with communication disabilities. She is a recipient of the prestigious Irish Research Council Laureate Grant, for the project Co-Construct (Communication disabilities and conversational success: Relevance-based pragmatic universals to support interaction) and was the academic lead of a multi-year partnership between Trinity College Dublin and the United Nations World Food Programme addressing inclusion in food assistance programming. Caroline is co-founder of the SADIE Network: Strengthening evidence-based Action on Disability and Inclusion in Emergencies.
